Hi, I’m Julia! A 2017 graduate of Scripps College in Claremont, California, I studied history and environmental analysis and am originally from Bainbridge Island, Washington. I’ve received a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to independently study local journalism and community-centered reporting around the world for the coming year. As of now, I’m planning to spend time in Nepal, India, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Spain, and Ecuador– visiting local newspapers, community radio stations, and online platforms to learn about how people conceive and carry out journalistic stories.
My work has appeared in teleSUR English, Oxpeckers Investigative Environmental Journalism, OpenParly ZW, Nepali Times, Newslaundry, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Marie Claire Magazine, Vela Magazine, Borgen Magazine, The Student Life, and The Bainbridge Island Review.
If you would like to provide any feedback or thoughts on this project, talk journalism or anything else, or share potential connections you have (to any of the places I’m going or elsewhere– always open to changing my itinerary!), please feel free to contact me at thomas.julia.m [at] gmail.com. I’d love to chat and look forward to hearing from you!
